Breakthrough Atlanta’s History
Breakthrough Atlanta celebrated its inaugural summer in 1996 hosted by The Lovett School. That year, 40 motivated middle school students participated in their first summer experience. Six years later, those students graduated from high school and 34 of them went on to pursue higher education in a university or college setting. Since Breakthrough Atlanta’s beginning, the program has served over 300 young teachers and more than 400 students from Metro Atlanta’s public schools.
Breakthrough Atlanta is a member of a national network called Breakthrough Collaborative with 29 affiliates operating 35 sites in 27 cities across the country and in Hong Kong. Breakthrough programs have received many accolades, including:
· In 2007 Breakthrough was named a top summer learning program by Johns Hopkins University.
· We are proud to say that once again the Princeton Review has chosen Breakthrough as one of the top ten internships in the U.S.
Our Student Programs:
Our student programs offer significant and challenging academic and personal development opportunities to a diverse and academically motivated group of Metro Atlanta public school 7th and 8th graders.
We recruit and accept students into our program in the Spring of their sixth grade year. Our students are motivated and have demonstrated the ability and desire to succeed academically.
Breakthrough Atlanta’s teachers represent such institutions as:
Brown University, Rutgers University, Morehouse College, Duke University, Spelman College, GA State, University of GA, Emory University, Smith College, UCLA, Vanderbilt, Davidson College, Rhodes College, University of Florida, Northwestern University, University of Miami, University of NC Chapel Hill and more!
The program is a catalyst to those college students who want to teach and help address our national teacher shortage by taking part in our training which encourages and supports the development of the next generation of professional educators. The teacher interns serve as the program’s faculty, mentors and tutors.
Breakthrough Atlanta provides an arena of support, instruction, skills and encouragement as well as mentoring by professional teachers. The professional teachers that support our college interns during the summer have three or more years experience in the classroom. Breakthrough ignites a passion for learning and a vision for the future.
~Our students understand that it is not only "ok to succeed" in school - it is imperative to succeed in life.~
