StudentsExperts have determined that middle school is one of the highest- risk periods in a student's life. That's why middle school is such a critical time in determining a student's future academic trajectory. Breakthrough Atlanta recruits current 6th and 7th grade students from the Atlanta public schools. Student applicants undergo a rigorous selection process, which includes essays, teacher recommendations, parent/guardian recommendations, and a personal interview. Teachers, guidance counselors, and principals also play an important role in the selection process. Breakthrough Atlanta seeks a diverse group of students whose opportunities could be expanded by our program. We look for students who earn A or B averages in their schools, but will also consider students with a minimum C average. We want students who will commit to the program for six years, and also who demonstrate factors that limit their opportunities. The common ingredient in all Breakthrough Atlanta students is that they share the desire to learn, and want to be the best students that they can be.
