Schedule and Policies
Attendance
Commitment to the program is essential for students to succeed at Breakthrough Atlanta. Students are expected to attend every day of the summer and school year programs; however, we understand that circumstances may cause them to miss a session. In order for students to fully benefit from the summer program, Breakthrough Atlanta has the following attendance policies. (Policies may be adapted at the Directors' discretion).

The energy that Breakthrough Atlanta students' possess is directly related to the energy of their teachers. In the morning, a Breakthrough Atlanta student will be welcomed by name with smiles, hellos, and excitement.
They are expected to come to class prepared when the teacher invites them in, be dressed tolerably (no hats, no unallowable t-shirt messages, no scarves, bandanas, or handkerchiefs), and have their homework and materials on the desk.
Academically, students know they will have homework and are expected to complete all assignments on time. The program will give all students an assignment sheet to use in all classes. Faculty will have a list of student phone numbers and faculty may give their phone numbers to students. Students will be asked to not call a teacher later than 9:00pm. Faculty should not call a student past 8:00 pm.
Classroom Expectations
- Follow directions.
- Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
- No swearing or teasing.
- No yelling or screaming.
- Bring all appropriate materials to class.
Homework Expectations
- All homework is to be completed for all classes each day.
- This is our standard of excellence to be upheld - try your best!
- If there are questions, do not hesitate to ask or call your teacher during approved after-hours contact.
- If there is an emergency that will prevent the completion of the homework, the parent/guardian must call the Dean of Students to explain the situation. This alone will excuse tardy homework.
Plagiarism/Cheating
- Another person's work, words, ideas, information, research, evidence, and so on must not be passed off as your own. You must not claim credit for work that was originally done by someone else.
- All unoriginal work, words, ideas, information, research, evidence, and so on must contain citation and referencing when used.
Policies
Health Issues
In case of an accident or minor injury, the program will make every effort to contact the parent or guardian. In the event of an emergency requiring medical care in which the program is unable to notify the parent(s)/guardian(s), the program is authorized to have the child treated by a qualified physician at the nearest emergency clinic. In case of serious injury, if the parent or guardian cannot be reached, then the program will contact the individual listed on the student's Emergency Medical Release form.
All prescribed medications taken during academic hours must be brought to the Program Director or the Dean of Students in a container appropriately labeled by the pharmacy. The parent or guardian must fill out and sign a medication consent form for the Program Director or Dean of Students to administer the medication. If the parent is unable to bring the medication to the Breakthrough Atlanta offices then the student may bring the medication and give it as soon as possible to the Program Director or the Dean of Students.
Students with asthma may self administer prescribed inhalers with written documentation.
Emergency and Security: Breakthrough Atlanta Closings
Severe weather, utility problems, or health emergencies may necessitate the closing of Breakthrough Atlanta. When such closings can be foreseen, an announcement will be made as early as possible. For weather closings, the decision will be made by 6:00 am and will be broadcasted over television stations WSB (Channel 2) WAGA (Channel 5) and WXIA (Channel 11). The closing/delay information listed for The Lovett School applies to Breakthrough Atlanta.
When emergency conditions cause the closing of the program during the academic day, the Breakthrough Atlanta offices will immediately notify the radio and television stations listed above.
